Quick Fix Credit Repair: What to Know to Protect Yourself and Your Credit Report

Be Warned: Quick Fix Credit Repair is No Fix at All

Today, anyone who has tried to buy furniture, an automobile, or especially a house, knows how important a good credit score is. A difference of only 100 points on your FICO credit score can determine whether you qualify for  an A or B loan, which can be the difference between several thousands of dollars. In our hurried society, most people look for a quick fix to repair their credit reports to get the best deal for their money. Be warned, however, there are several scams that offer a quick route to change your credit score. At best, these offers are shady, and at worse, some are downright illegal.

First, remember the old adage, "if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is." This is especially true with quick fix credit repair. Your credit report is a snapshot of your past credit performance. Companies reporting to the credit agencies are required to be as accurate as possible, and mistakes do happen. However, if you have made credit mistakes, no law firm or company can have those items removed from your credit report. In general, bad credit remains on your report for up to seven years, with Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcies reporting up to ten years. You can, however, write to the three major credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experion, and TransUnion, and have a letter attached to your credit file explaining the circumstances surrounding the bruises on your credit report. This does not change your credit score, but at least gives potential creditors an explanation they can take into consideration. If there are true inaccuracies on your credit report, you can write to the three major credit reporting agencies and dispute these items. This is something you can do yourself and does not require a third party. www.Equifax.com is a good place to look for further information regarding this process, and is very user friendly.

A Do-it-Yourself Guide to Credit Repair

Simple Steps for Repairing Your Own Credit Report and Increasing Your Credit Scores

With today's credit crunch limiting the amount of cash available for loans and credit lines, many people are finding it more difficult to qualify for a loan or get the funding that they so badly need. If this sounds like a familiar situation, here are some  simple steps you can take to improve your credit score and increase your chances of securing a loan.

First things first - you should start by requesting a free copy of your credit report. There are many options online for requesting a free credit report. Your best choice is to find a service that provides a "three in one" credit report. A 3-in-1 report will give you a better glimpse of your overall credit rating because it provides scores from all three credit reporting agencies.

After you've requested your free credit report take a close look at your credit scores. In a perfect world, you would hope to have a score of 700 or greater. That is considered a good credit rating. Scores between 620 and 700 are average and anything below 620 is potentially in need of credit repair.

Getting your credit repaired is not just a matter of knowing how to deal with creditors, collection firms, and consumer reporting agencies. It is also essential that you know your legal rights under the laws dealing with credit reports and credit repair organizations. Knowing your rights  will aid you in your fight to regain a respectable credit rating, and will also help you to avoid the danger of falling for a credit repair scam.

You have a number of rights regarding what other parties may do what your credit information. The law states that consumer reporting agencies must and sure that the information found on your credit report is accurate. This is in line with the permissions of the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Therefore, if you believe there to be inaccuracies on your credit report, you can call the attention of the consumer reporting agencies and they will have to verify the information. If they cannot verify it, then under the law, they must make corrections to the report and send you a free copy of the corrected report. Furthermore, once an agency has made a correction to your credit report, it may not refile the negative information that was changed for a duration of five days since you received notice of the correction.

Credit Repair Firms Prey on the Desperate

Certified Credit Counselor Offering Solutions to Your Credit and Debt Concerns"

Consumers are vulnerable to a variety of credit repair scams that promise a solution, especially if you have a shaky credit history. These scams often appear as an apparition of hope just when life has delivered you with financial difficulties that send your credit rating plummeting.  Don't be fooled. These companies are predators looking to suck you in, because they want to profit off your misfortune, rather than help you.

The truth is that there is no fast solution to get poor credit to miraculously become excellent overnight. Negative Information stays on your credit report for up to seven years. On the up-side, positive information stays on your credit report for up to ten years. Once you have a black mark, it's unfortunate how the lending industry holds you accountable for seven years, but it is a fact of life in modern society. In this article, I'm going to expose and dissect a few of the most popular types of scams.

The first type of scam I am going to address is credit repair firms. I always advise clients to avoid credit repair companies like the plague. These companies will promise to raise your credit score in a short period of time to help you secure a good rate on a mortgage or car loan. They will charge you hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars to provide you with their services. In reality, credit repair firms steal your hard earned money and dig you deeper in debt.

The Truth About Credit Repair Part 1 (As Told by an Industry Professional)

Have you ever seen advertisements guaranteeing you a high credit score in as little as 30 days? Or maybe you have seen a do it yourself credit repair book. The truth is credit repair does NOT work. At least not the way you want it to or the way unscrupulous  companies sell it to you. I have been in the credit industry for 10+ years; I actually used to own a credit assistance company (educational), prior to that, a collection agency. Guess what, I am going to tell you the whole truth for absolutely NOTHING! Well actually, almost nothing, I want you to read my article. So here it is.

When you owe money to a creditor you actually owe them the money.... Unless there has truly been some kind of error, i.e. the account is not yours; you are a victim of identity theft, etc. By law you are entitled to dispute the validity of an account, this can be done by logging into experian.com, transunion.com and Equifax.com. If you have been denied credit in the past 30 days.... Or a company has pulled your credit; you are entitled to a free online copy of your credit report, (which you can use to dispute online).

By law a consumer can dispute an account and the creditor has 30 days to respond. They then have a 15 day reinvestigation period. This means that if a dispute is received from the bureau by the creditor and they do not respond in time, even if the item comes off, if it is reverified within the 15 day time frame it will go back on. Many credit repair companies sent a barrage of erroneous disputes in the hopes that a creditor will neglect to respond. Make no mistake about this: "Just because an item is deleted from your report does not mean you do not owe the money" That's right; even if an item does get deleted the creditor still has legal recourse. Any deleted items on your report are strictly cosmetic unless it is deleted legitimately. The FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act) States:

Credit Repair Scams That You Must Avoid

Credit repair is one of the nation's fastest-growing industries, and no wonder! The victims of predatory lending, the purveyors of bankrupt businesses and the casualties of the recent real estate foreclosures have created a built-in market  that requires immediate assistance. And while some of these companies are legitimate and helpful, there are far too many credit repair scams to count, and you must avoid them at all costs.

"Guaranteed Results!"

Credit repair is largely a guess-and-check system that can be manipulated by professionals, but it is not a business where results can be guaranteed. In fact, Congress declared several years ago that it is unlawful for credit repair services to guarantee specific results.

If you are targeted by a company that promises a certain outcome from their efforts, know that it is probably a credit repair scam. They are breaking serious federal statutes, and they are also lying---it is patently impossible to predict the outcome of credit repair efforts.

Credit Repair, You Can Do it on Your Own!

Tips on Repairing Your Own Credit

Do not be fooled with credit repair agencies. You can repair your own credit. A great benefit to repairing you own credit (besides a higher FICO score) is that you have a sense of accomplishment for doing it on your own, and your credit report wont show that you used a credit repair  agency.

Credit repair take diligence and some hard work. But if you want to purchase a home, get a credit card, or buy a car, you will need to raise your FICO score.

The higher your FICO score, the lower interest rate you will pay. The lower your FICO score, the higher your interest rate. Companies will see you as a risk for lending if you have a low FICO score.

Credit Repair Company Vs. Do-it-Yourself Credit Repair

If you have thought about using one of those credit repair companies, I encourage you to re-think your position. In this article I will give you some pros and cons of using a credit repair service and the pros and cons of doing it yourself.

Let me start by saying the only pro I can find for using a credit repair company would be because of time constraints. If you cannot find an hour a day to devote to cleaning up your credit then you may want to retain the services of one of these agencies. I would recommend doing thorough  research on the companies that are under your consideration.

Some of these companies promise you fast credit repair. There is no such thing as fast credit repair. The process takes time. Consider this; the average dispute with the credit agencies takes about 30 days. If the credit agency does not budge or claims the data is accurate, you are looking at another 30 days challenging with the creditor. Even if you win the dispute with the creditor it could take another 60-90 days for the item to disappear from your credit report. A number of these companies that promise fast credit repair are actually trying to get you to change your identity. That's right, new SSN, etc… Let me tell you this is highly illegal and unethical. Stay clear of these companies.

Confessions of a Credit Repair Agency

Credit repair is a very debated topic on the net right now as to whether it's legal, effective, ethical and an avenue worth pursuing for individuals with negative, inaccurate or unverifiable information on their credit reports. No matter where you search, you will find varying opinions in  regard the legitimacy of the credit repair industry, from the FTC and Attorney General, to debt consolidation companies and law firms practicing credit repair companies.

First off to answer the question "is credit repair and its practitioners legal," the answer is yes! There is a specific body of legislation, the Credit Repair Organizations Act (CROA) that outlines how credit repair companies may legally operate. This Federal regulation is proof that the industry as a whole is legal and not a scam. I think the negative overtones are more likely a case of a few hundred bad apples taking advantage of people.

The second most debated topic in many of the popular credit forums is whether or not one should even use a credit repair company, or give it a go themselves? The art of credit repair or credit restoration is not necessarily a difficult one to grasp and despite what a lot of the credit repair companies and lawyers would like you to believe, there is no "magical, proprietary dispute letter." Remember, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) was set up so that consumers could fix errors on their credit reports on their own. It was not set up so consumers could fix errors If they had the magic letter. It really is almost as simple as saying...

5 Warning Signs that a Credit Repair Company Will Rip You Off

For the last 5 or 6 years I've been telling friends and family how ugly of an industry credit repair and debt settlement is getting to be. I've also said that sooner or later the FTC would shake out the bad apples making it a safe place for consumers again.

It looks like my prediction was wrong. It's gotten worse...much worse. And faster than I thought,  too.

Regulatory bodies have cracked down as much as they can, but so far their efforts have been in vain. With the current economy, the housing market collapse and bankruptcies soaring, it's just too much temptation for the scam artists of the world to resist.

Why Credit Repair Dispute Letters and Credit Repair Mills Don't Work

When credit repair was relatively new, it was easy. The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) was created to ensure and enforce your right to fair and accurate credit reporting. It gave you the right to dispute credit and often times it worked.

That was then, this is now and these letters are a waste of time, so are the credit repair companies that use  them.

One of its provisions states that a consumer may request in writing validation, or proof of any debt with the Credit Reporting Agencies (CRA's). They then have 30 days to prove the debts accuracy. If they cannot provide the necessary proof in the given time frame, the debt has to be deleted from your credit report. Sounds easy right?

Fast and Easy Self Credit Repair

For those of you who are struggling with bad credit, did you know that you can repair your own credit fast and easy? There's nothing that those so called credit repair experts can do for you that you can't do for yourself except take your money (hundreds or even thousands of dollars). By  simply writing dispute letters and requesting an investigation of accounts on your credit report, you can make a drastic positive change in your credit history and boost your credit score significantly in 90 days.

The first thing you need to do is get a copy of your credit report from all three major credit bureaus which are Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union. There may be some accounts on one report that is not showing on another. To get an accurate picture of your credit situation you will need to look at all three reports. You're entitled to a free credit report once a year or within 60 days of you having been turned down for credit. To get your free annual credit report just type "free annual credit report" in to any search engine and go to one of the websites that come up.

Once you have gotten your credit reports you need to analyze what accounts are in good standing and what accounts are inaccurate or hurting your credit score. The next step is to write a letter disputing the inaccurate or hurtful accounts and send them out to the credit bureaus. The credit bureaus then have 30 days to investigate your dispute and either delete accounts or verify them. If they can't verify them within 30 days then it is required by law for them to delete them from your report.

Do Free Credit Repair Services Really Work?

Do free credit repair services really work? The short answer would be no. But this answer would be a disservice to a fairly complicated subject.

As I learned from my own experience after a particularly messy divorce, my credit was shot and I had bills up the wazoo! I would describe into whose wazoo I wanted to place these bills, but that would be an altogether different article.

As we move towards a more connected society, a person's credit rating becomes ever more important. Being approved for loans, the interest rate you receive, even employment opportunities can be affected by your credit rating. Knowing this I decided to find a free credit repair service.

Free Credit Repair Services

There are a lot of credit repair services out there. Some charge a fee, some don't charge a fee. And others claim to be free, but have hidden charges. For the last three years, I have been researching this subject, and what I've found may surprise you.

The best free credit repair service is easy to find. You live with the person each day - YOU. You can do anything that any credit repair service can do, and there are no hidden charges. And, while some of these free credit repair services can sometimes make your credit worse, in the way  of a black mark on your credit report, fixing your own credit avoids that.

You can find everything you need by visiting Dave Ramsey's website at www.daveramsey.com. I've never had problems with my credit, but there was a time that I believed that debt and credit cards were okay. They are a fact of life, and everybody has them, right? Wrong. Dave Ramsey opened my eyes to a whole new way of living, and helped me achieve freedom from debt. You can achieve that same freedom, with just a little hard work. And just think - it took you time to get into the debt that you are currently in, so it's understandably going to take you some time to get back out.

Credit Repair - Buyer Beware

How to Tell If a Credit Repair Company is a Scam

You see all of the ads on TV and in print. Fix your credit problems, improve your credit score, and they show an 800 number and give a website for more information. Are these programs legitimate or are they frauds? Here are the facts that everyone needs to know.

The first thing to know is the difference between a legitimate credit counseling agency and a scam. A credit counseling agency is usually non-profit. In addition, a legitimate credit counseling agency will not promise to fix credit problems and improve your credit score. Instead, they  will give you sound advice on how to manage your money, pay bills on time, and decrease debt service. A legitimate credit counseling agency will not ask for money upfront. Many banks and credit unions offer free credit counseling services.

In comparison, scams usually make incredible promises. They ask for a monthly fee plus an upfront fee. These fees are expensive. Here is how to tell if it is a scam, even if they are non-profit. Check with the local State Attorney General's Office and ask them if there are any complaints against the company you are considering. Then check with the BBB (Better Business Bureau). Once that is done and you are satisfied that the company is legitimate here are some points to consider before you shell out your hard earned money on one of these services.
